SHIPPING
This bag arrived on a Friday afternoon in Seattle Washington after being ordered on Monday night and being shipped from Van Nuys California. It was sent via USPS Priority Mail in a bag and when unfolded had a couple wrinkles which disappeared on their own after a few hours.
FLAP
The flap looks like the flap in the main picture of this bag, with one minor exception. It has one long piece of olive green colored velcro on the other side of the flap from the two rectangular pieces of fabric pictured. The small red tag with white writing on it is not present on my flap, but is instead located on the end of the bag, where the strap is sewn on.
STRAP
The strap looks pretty comfortable and durable. It's made of the same fabric as the rest of the bag. On one side of the bag it's sewn directly to the bag, and on the other side of the bag it's looped through a wide, flat, rectangular brass ring which is inserted through a wide loop of fabric on the bag. Another brass ring is used to adjust the length of the strap which can be as short as approximately 28" and as long as approximately 48". The length adjustment ring stays in place really well but is still easy to adjust and moves smoothly along the strap.
SIDE POCKETS
Each side of the bag has a pocket which runs nearly the height of the bag and has a brass snap. The main picture of this bag shows a red sports drink, which I thought was kind of deceiving until I tried to put a 32 oz. gatorade drink in each side. To my surprise, it actually fit! The pocket doesn't look big enough to hold one of these bottles, but it just barely is. The snap won't fasten with a 32oz bottle in the pocket, but without a bottle the snaps work very well and have a solid feel to them. Just above one side pocket is a small black tag (1cm x 1cm) which says RD in white and shows curved white lines sort of resembling wings. Just above the other side pocket is a small red tag (1cm tall by 3cm wide) that says RAPDOM in white letters. Apparently this stands for Rapid Dominance, which wikipedia says is some sort of military tactic where you just overwhelm your opponent into giving up.
BACK OF BAG
The back of this bag (the side that rests against your body) has one large pocket that is approximately 7" tall (2/3 to 3/4 as tall as the bag's main compartment) and as wide as the bag (approximately 14"). It has one small piece of velcro just below the top edge of the pocket to close it.
UNDER THE FLAP
When you un-velcro the main flap and flip it out of the way, you find two large pouches. Each pouch has a zipper running along the top and a small square of velcro on the outside that the flap's velcro attaches to. The pouches are each approximately 7" tall and 6" wide. The zippers each have a logo like the one by the strap which says RD (same brass color as the rest of the zipper). The pockets both zip closed to the inside of the bag, so you wouldnt be able to reach under the flap and grab the zippers and open the pouches with the main flap closed. This seems more secure than the alternative. Above the right-hand pouch is an olive green tag (slightly lighter colored than the darker olive green of the bag) that says "RAPID DOMINANCE Standard Issue" and has the black RD logo and also a line for you to write your name:
MAIN COMPARTMENT
The main compartment of this bag has a long zipper that runs the length of the bag and when you unzip this zipper you find a shiny olive green vinyl lining inside. On one inner wall of the main compartment in the vinyl lining is an inner pocket approximately the size of one of the pouches on the outside. The vinyl is pretty solid, but not too thick, so I wouldn't put anything sharp or heavy in this inner pocket. The main compartment of the bag, however, seems very durable.
Customer Review: A simple, yet extremely useful bag. Rating: 5 Stars
This bag is great. I had a backpack for school before this and I wanted try a messenger bag.I must say, Ifound a great one!
It's very affordable, and it's a solid build. It's simple, which if you're like me, is a plus. There isn't a hundred little pockets that you never use. Two big pockets in the front and a small pouch for pens on the inside. You can fit tons of stuff in here. I can fit one big text book, two large notebooks, a small note book, 4 smaller paper back textbooks, a thick portfolio and a medium bag of M&Ms just in the main compartment. On the outside compartments, I fit a graphing calculator, an iPod and a couple of granola bars. And, a bottle of water in the side pocket. Mind you, this is a very heavy load, and I have no reason to carry quite that much around. But, It does fit a simple load very well, too. A small and large text book and two notebooks fit just fine. It can fit a lot and it handles small loads quite comfortably as well.
Be warned, there is not a zipper, so be careful about leaving you bag out of site in a place you don't trust. The bag stays pretty close to your arm, but I still keep my eye out for anyone pick-pocketing. I can't say it rides vary comfortably on your shoulder, but it's fine for walking around campus. If you're traveling through airports with it, consider packing a little lighter. Typically though, while traveling, you won't have 8 books in your bag.
Note! This bag will carry a laptop. I, personally, am not fond of carrying my laptop in this bag. Maybe only short distances like to an internet café.
Buy this bag if;
-You want something besides a back pack
-You want something simple
-You need to carry around a lot of books (or just a few!)
-You want a bag that can be used for all kinds of things ( i.e., going to the park, camping, the beach, school, work, traveling, sneaking food into the movies, looking hip)
Customer Review: Classic and Durable Rating: 5 Stars
I've had this bag for about one year and I love it! Without realizing it, I have stopped using all my other backpacks and this has become my daily bag. I carry my 15" laptop (about 5.5 lbs) in addition to many books, a binder, my lunch and a big water bottle and this bag is comfortable for my daily bike commutes. I usually never have to worry about how much stuff I put in it since it seems to have a black hole inside that holds everything and still closes just fine.
I love that it is no frills--perhaps that's my own aesthetic preference, but that's a big plus. It has two deep front pockets which I regularly jam full of stuff (laptop charger, mouse, wallet, cellphone, pencil case) and I've never had any of it fall out. But that's not all: it also has two deep side pockets (one of which I use for my aluminum water bottle the other for a bottle of beer--hey why not?).
I will say that one of the velcro pieces has started to come undone, but it's nothing a few stitches can't fix. Overall, I highly recommend this bag, for the price, the value is amazing. I never feel like my things are in jeopardy (especially my expensive computer!). That said, I recommend a padded computer case because the bag is not lined.
Because I live in the rainy pacific NW, I have also sprayed this bag with waterproofing spray (only once in over a year) and it has held up beautifully during the daily onslaught without risking any damage to my computer. Most people here ride their bikes and spend gobs of cash on ridiculous looking timbuk2 bags which look like they should have a nike swoosh on them somewhere. Because I was looking for something waterproof and roomy I almost made that same mistake. I found this bag and saved at least 100 bucks. How awesome is that?
Customer Review: Perfect for What I Was Looking For Rating: 5 Stars
I purchased the Olive Drab version of this bag. Even though it has not been a great deal of time since my purchase (only a few days, as a matter of fact), I was very pleased with what I received. I was looking for simplicity: something I could use as a means of carrying my school supplies around campus instead of dealing with an abysmal traditional backpack. I can say that this bag fit my needs perfectly. The simplicity of the design is wonderful and very functional for a carrying bag. In fact, I would have been perfectly fine without a velcro strip, especially since I plan on avoiding it (however, those of you that are looking to use the velcro, the strips really only line up if the bag is rather full). The full description of the bag may be found below.
The strap is nice and wide to allow as much comfort as possible. There is one large main compartment for large items, with a small zipper pouch sewn in as an extra flap (a little pointless in my opinion, but still could be useful); two decent sized pockets on the front of the bag and two smaller compartments on the sides, all for convenient storage for "ready-at-hand" items; and, of course, the large flap that covers the large compartment and two front pockets.
Like I said, the only downside to be considered with this bag are the velcro strips, but I have no intention of using them. That is only personal opinion, of course. However, I find that this bag is perfect for any university student that is constantly moving from area to area of campus, especially since the bag is very lightweight for less burden while walking longer distances. It was a fantastic buy and I recommend it to anyone looking to pick up a messenger bag.
Customer Review: The Perfect Messenger Bag Rating: 5 Stars
This messenger bag is exactly what I was looking for. It is constructed of heavy canvas, so durability is not a problem whatsoever. The main compartment is a good size for my 14' laptop. 15' would probably be fine, but larger laptops may not work, especially if there is anything else in the bag. Besides the main compartment, there are two small pockets at either end of the bag, the perfect size for a small camera, cell phone, or a small water bottle. Beneath the flap, on the front of the bag are two more pockets. A zippered pocket is inside the bag...good for loose change, keys, cell phone, or anything else you need quick access too but don't want to leave in easy reach of a passerby.
What this bag is good for:
University students. Since I am one, I would know. This bag is a good size for a small laptop and at least one textbook, or two textbooks and a notebook or two, whatever. It is also good for general use out on the town.
What this bag is NOT good for:
The main thing is going overseas or any kind of tourism where securing money, passports, etc, is vital. The bag does not zip across the top nor does the flap fasten in any way besides a small velcro strip. In other words, if you're looking for a bag to carry around Amsterdam, this is not a good choice.
Overall, excellent bag!
